Applying to the Paris-Dauphine Master 203: Selection Criteria, CV and Cover Letter

The most sought-after market finance master's: application file, selection criteria and interview preparation.

By Équipe FinanceCV

The Paris-Dauphine Master 203 (Financial Markets) is one of the most sought-after programmes for anyone aiming at market finance. Its reputation for selectivity discourages some candidates and pushes others to apply without a method. Here is how to read the official criteria, build a coherent application, prepare for the interview and plan a plan B. Calendar and prerequisite details change: always check the official page before applying.

What the programme offers and who it is for

"The 203" is the common name of the Financial Markets master at Paris-Dauphine - PSL University, offered in first year (M1) and second year (M2). It prepares for careers in market finance and asset management: trading floor, portfolio management, quantitative analysis, risk.

Target audience:

  • in M1, holders of a bachelor's degree in economics, management or mathematics, or students from leading business or engineering schools;
  • in M2, mainly students from Dauphine's own finance M1, with grade and course requirements.

The exact conditions (minimum grades, expected courses, English test, work experience required in M2) are detailed on the official admission pages: M1 Financial Markets - 203 🔗 and M2 Financial Markets - 203 🔗. Read them in full: they specify the required English level (a test such as the TOEFL may be required) and the recommended tests.

Selection criteria and profile of admitted students

Selection takes place in several stages, described by the university: online application, file review to check eligibility, then an interview for shortlisted candidates. It therefore rests on three pillars.

1. The academic record. Grades, the level of your home institution and the consistency of your path are closely examined. Quantitative subjects (maths, statistics, probability) weigh heavily, since the master is demanding in this respect.

2. Technical prerequisites. The official page lists expected courses, notably in corporate finance, statistics, financial mathematics or programming. If one is missing, do not hide it: fill the gap with a certified online course or a project, and mention it.

3. A coherent project. The jury looks for candidates who know why market finance, and not just "finance". An internship, a student finance society, a personal portfolio-management project or preparing a certification speak for you.

⚠️ Warning: do not rely on admission-rate figures or typical profiles found on forums without checking them. They are rarely up to date and often unverifiable. Rely on the official page and, if needed, the university's open days.

Building an academic CV

A master's application CV is not a recruitment CV. It must highlight education, quantitative rigour and commitment to markets.

Recommended order of sections:

  1. Education first, with honours, rankings and key subjects (probability, econometrics, market finance).
  2. Experience: internships and jobs, with results where possible.
  3. Projects: a quantitative finance project, a trading or portfolio competition, a dissertation.
  4. Technical skills: advanced Excel, Python, SQL, Bloomberg if you have access. See Python on a finance CV to describe a level honestly.
  5. Languages with levels and test scores (TOEFL, TOEIC).
  6. Useful interests: activities that show consistency, teamwork or a taste for markets.

Examples of phrasing to adapt with your facts:

  • Before: "Took part in a portfolio management competition."
  • After: "Portfolio management competition (team of 4): built a 15-stock portfolio, analysed the Sharpe ratio, ranked among the teams of the year group."

Writing a strong cover letter and acing the interview

The cover letter (if requested). It answers three questions: why market finance, why Dauphine, why now. Each paragraph must rest on a fact from your path, not a generic phrase. Avoid sentences such as "Dauphine is a prestigious university": cite specific courses or career outcomes of the programme instead.

The interview. Shortlisted candidates are invited. Prepare:

  • Your path in three minutes, with a common thread.
  • Your motivations: why markets, what you plan next.
  • Basic technical questions: interest rates, bonds, risk and return, probability. Review the fundamentals from your courses.
  • Market news: central bank decisions, rate moves, what marked the week. Be able to discuss it with a point of view.

Our article on preparing for an investment banking interview details the method and classic questions.

Calendar and application documents

Applications are made online on the platform indicated by the university, during a limited window early in the year. For the 2026 campaign, the announced window ran from mid-January to the end of February: check the dates for the current campaign on the admission page, as they change from year to year.

Documents generally requested (to confirm on the official page):

  • CV and cover letter;
  • transcripts and diplomas;
  • proof of English level;
  • possibly test results (GMAT, GRE) or work experience certificates.

Our calendar advice: start three months before opening. Gathering transcripts, sitting an English test and writing a solid file takes longer than people think.

Common mistakes and plan B

Costly mistakes:

  • An incomplete file or one sent at the last minute.
  • A generic CV that says nothing about markets or quantitative skills.
  • A vague project: "I like finance" is not enough.
  • A broken layout: a document with shifted columns or badly rendered icons reads poorly. FinanceCV spares you this: you write the content and the tool handles formatting to produce a clean CV compatible with screening software.

Plan B. Applying to a single master's, however excellent, is a risk. Submit several applications to neighbouring programmes. The finance masters of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, of leading schools or of other universities offer comparable careers. If you are not admitted, strengthen your file (internship, a certification such as the CFA, programming courses) and reapply the following year, or aim for an alternative route.
