One-Page or Detailed Resume: Which Format to Choose in Finance

Settling the resume format debate based on your profile, experience and target country, with the real expectations of finance recruiters.

By Équipe FinanceCV

"Should my resume fit on one page?" is a question finance candidates ask constantly. The answer depends less on a universal rule than on your experience level, the country you're applying in, and the type of role you're targeting.

The case for the one-page resume

The one-page resume remains the dominant standard in France, especially for junior profiles. According to Hellowork 🔗, a one-page resume is expected for anyone with less than ten years of experience, and a recruiter spends on average only 30 to 40 seconds on the first read of a resume.

Why the one-page format works particularly well in finance:

  • It demonstrates synthesis skills, a competency directly valued in roles where the clarity of a pitch book or an analyst note matters as much as its content.
  • It forces prioritization: only the most relevant experiences and skills for the target role appear, making the recruiter's quick read easier.
  • It avoids the "kitchen sink" resume pitfall, where old or barely relevant experiences dilute the impact of recent ones.

This is why nearly all resumes in investment banking, private equity or strategy consulting follow this rule, even for candidates who already have several significant internships.

The case for the detailed resume

The two-page resume becomes relevant - even expected - past a certain experience level. Per the same Hellowork analysis, 54% of French recruiters prefer a two-page resume once experience exceeds fifteen years.

A detailed resume is justified when:

  • The number of relevant experiences no longer fits on one page without sacrificing the quantified elements that make the resume valuable.
  • The target role is a senior leadership or management position, where the full history of responsibilities (team size managed, P&L owned, transformations led) needs to be visible to establish the candidate's credibility.
  • The application targets a market where the two-page format is the norm (see the section below on usage by country).

The pitfall of the detailed resume: beyond two pages, the opposite effect kicks in - the recruiter perceives a lack of synthesis ability, regardless of experience level. Two pages remain the upper limit, never a target to systematically reach.

What finance recruiters actually expect

Beyond the page count, finance recruiters apply a more fundamental criterion: every line must justify its presence by its relevance to the target role, regardless of the chosen format.

A poorly prioritized one-page resume (which keeps irrelevant experiences at the expense of key ones) is less effective than a well-structured two-page resume where every section adds useful information for the recruiter's decision. Page count is a means, not an end: the goal remains readability and relevance.

Three questions to ask yourself when choosing your format, regardless of your years of experience:

  1. Are all the experiences presented relevant to the target role?
  2. Can the recruiter identify your value added in under a minute of reading?
  3. Is the chosen format consistent with the norms of the target market and country?

Format by country and experience level

Usage varies significantly across markets:

  • France: one page for junior and mid-level profiles, two pages tolerated beyond ten to fifteen years of experience or for leadership roles.
  • UK and other Anglo-Saxon countries: the "CV" (as distinct from the American "resume") more easily tolerates two pages, even for candidates with five to seven years of experience, particularly in consulting and corporate finance.
  • United States: the "resume" generally stays on one page for candidates with less than ten years of experience; beyond that, two pages become acceptable but remain less systematic than in the UK.
  • Academic or research applications (beyond the strict finance scope): a longer format (academic CV) is the norm, but this case doesn't concern the vast majority of finance or banking applications.

How to adapt your format to your application

For a junior candidate or early-career profile (less than 5 years of experience): the one-page resume applies almost without exception, including for international applications. A two-page junior resume generally signals a lack of prioritization rather than a wealth of experience.

For a mid-level profile (5 to 10 years of experience): the choice becomes more nuanced. If your most relevant experiences fit on one page without sacrificing the essential quantified elements, keep that format. Otherwise, move to two pages rather than overloading one page by shrinking the font - an unreadable resume is worse than a well-spaced two-page one.

For a senior profile or leadership role (more than 10-15 years of experience): two pages generally become necessary and expected, provided you keep a clear hierarchy between recent experiences (detailed) and older ones (summarized in one or two lines).

For an unconventional career path resume with several sector changes: the format may need a specific adjustment beyond simple page count - our guide on the unconventional career path resume details alternative formats (annotated chronological, skills-based) suited to these profiles.

⚠️ Warning: whatever format you choose, never exceed two pages in finance, even for a very senior profile. A recruiter who receives a three-page or longer resume will systematically perceive it as a lack of synthesis discipline - a skill that's actually central to finance roles.

Choosing the right format is only one step - the structure and content of each section matter more. FinanceCV generates a structured, ATS-compatible resume, on one or two pages depending on your profile, so you can spend your time choosing the right experiences to highlight rather than battling with formatting.
