Budgeting, forecasting, reporting, decision support: the FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) analyst is the corporate finance role that looks ahead rather than in the rear-view mirror. It is often confused with management control (contrôle de gestion), to which it is very close, but the two do not cover exactly the same tasks. Here is what an FP&A analyst actually does day to day, the studies that lead to the role, the skills recruiters expect, what to know about pay, the career paths that open up, and how to present this profile on a CV.
What does an FP&A analyst actually do day to day?
The FP&A analyst works inside a company's finance department (an industrial group, a bank, an insurer, a software publisher, a retailer…). The mission: turn numbers into recommendations so that management can decide where to allocate resources.
Recurring tasks:
- The budget: building, together with the operating departments, the annual plan for revenue, costs and investments.
- The forecast: regularly revising the outlook during the year to say where the company will really end up compared with the budget.
- Variance analysis: explaining why actuals differ from budget or from the prior year (volumes, prices, mix, costs) and what follows from it.
- Management reporting: preparing dashboards, presentations for the executive committee and, in a listed group, inputs for financial communication.
- Modelling: building scenarios (rising costs, loss of a client, a product launch) to measure the impact on profitability and cash.
- Business partnering: supporting a scope (sales, marketing, product, operations) and helping it make decisions based on numbers.
FP&A and management control: what are the differences?
In practice the two roles overlap a great deal, and job titles vary from one company to another. A few useful markers:
- Management control traditionally emphasises monitoring: product costing, the monthly close, variance analysis, data reliability.
- FP&A emphasises anticipation and decision-making: forecasts, scenarios, capital allocation, support for strategy.
- In Anglo-Saxon groups and technology companies, people almost always say FP&A. In France, many companies say « contrôleur de gestion » for a very similar function.
So read the job posting rather than the title: the content of the tasks matters more than the label. For the more traditional side of the profession, see our guide on becoming a management controller.
Studies and routes into the role
The most common entry level is a five-year degree (bac+5), as described in the management controller job profiles published by Onisep 🔗 and by Apec 🔗, the closest French equivalent of the position. Several routes exist:
- University master's degrees in management control, corporate finance, accounting-control-audit, often offered as work-study programmes.
- Business schools, with a finance or management control major in the final year.
- Engineering schools, for profiles that complete their training with a master's or a specialised master's in finance: quantitative profiles are appreciated in industrial and technology companies.
- The accounting route (DCG, then DSCG) for those who start in accounting before moving toward analysis.
- Internal moves: an accountant, an assistant management controller or an audit analyst can join an FP&A team after a few years.

Key skills recruiters look for
Technical skills:
- Advanced Excel: it is the analyst's basic tool. Pivot tables, lookup functions, multi-scenario models, Power Query. See our essential Excel skills in finance.
- Reading financial statements: income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and how an operating assumption changes them.
- Financial modelling: linking volumes, prices, costs and investments in a coherent, testable model.
- Planning and data tools: an ERP, a budgeting and planning tool (EPM type), increasingly a visualisation tool such as Power BI, and sometimes SQL or Python to automate repetitive tasks.
- English, very present as soon as the company belongs to an international group.
Behavioural skills:
- The ability to synthesise: one clear page beats forty tabs. Your reader is a busy executive.
- Communication: explaining a variance to a sales director without jargon, and defending an assumption in front of them.
- Rigour and critical thinking: checking that a number is consistent before sending it.
- Curiosity about the business: understanding what the company does so that you ask the operating teams the right questions.
Our article on essential soft skills in finance explains how to demonstrate them in an interview.
Salary and pay at each stage
There is no single pay scale: an FP&A analyst's pay depends on company size, sector, region (Paris area or not), experience level and the responsibility of the scope. A listed group or a technology company generally pays more than a small business, and the variable part (bonus on targets) can matter.
Rather than remembering a figure found on a classified-ads site, proceed as follows:
- Consult the Apec job profiles, which publish pay ranges for each executive-level role. They exist for the management controller 🔗 and for the head of management control 🔗, which lets you measure the gap between an entry-level post and a manager post.
- Compare with real job postings: postings that display a range are the most useful, provided you compare positions of the same level and location.
- Distinguish fixed salary from total compensation: bonus, profit-sharing, incentive schemes, benefits and remote work.
- Keep progression in mind: the gap widens mostly when moving from a first job to a senior one, then to team lead.
To place the profession relative to other career tracks, read our overview of salaries in markets and investment banking: it covers another world, but will help you compare.
⚠️ Warning: always negotiate on precise elements (scope, level of responsibility, the range in the posting) rather than on a figure you heard around you.
Career paths and opportunities
FP&A is an excellent observation post: you see the whole company, you work with management, you learn fast. Typical trajectories:
- Analyst, then senior analyst: a wider scope, more complex models, running a budget cycle.
- Finance business partner: attached to an operating department, with an advisory role in decisions.
- Head of FP&A or head of management control: managing a team and running the budget process, a position that, according to Apec, requires significant experience.
- Director of management control, then CFO: the classic path toward the finance leadership, with an increasingly strategic dimension.
- Bridges: project finance, investor relations, corporate development (mergers and acquisitions on the corporate side), or consulting and audit.
The profession also lays the foundations of an international career: FP&A vocabulary and methods are found from one country to another.
How to showcase this profile on your CV
The recruiter for an FP&A position is looking for proof that you can build, explain and defend a number. Your CV should show it.
A few principles:
- A clear title at the top of the CV: « FP&A Analyst » or « Financial Analyst – Budget and Forecast », with your domain (industry, technology, retail).
- Achievements rather than tasks: « Built the annual budget for a scope of several entities », « set up a monthly forecast to replace a quarterly exercise ». Quantify when possible, with exact figures you can justify in an interview.
- Named tools: Excel and its advanced functions, ERP, planning tool, Power BI, SQL.
- The link to the decision: state what changed thanks to your analysis (a saving identified, an informed trade-off, a faster process).
- A clean, readable layout, compatible with the applicant tracking systems (ATS) that read your CV before any human does.
You can see what a polished document looks like with our FP&A analyst CV example. For the general method, read our guide on writing a finance CV.
On the formatting side, FinanceCV handles the layout for you: you concentrate on the content, and the resulting PDF is read correctly by tracking software, which discards poorly structured CVs before a recruiter ever opens them.
