Cover Letter in English for an International Job Application

The codes of the Anglo-Saxon cover letter differ from the French lettre de motivation: structure, vocabulary and a full example for an international application.

By Équipe FinanceCV

Literally translating your French cover letter into English is the most common - and most visible - mistake in front of an Anglo-Saxon recruiter. An English cover letter follows different, more direct codes, detailed below.

Cover letter vs. the French lettre de motivation

The French lettre de motivation often favors a more formal opening and a certain restraint in self-assessment. The Anglo-Saxon cover letter works the other way: it expects a direct demonstration of your value, from the very first lines, without excessive courtesy detours.

Key differences:

| Element | French letter | English cover letter | |---|---|---| | Tone | Formal, reserved | Direct, results-oriented | | Length | Can exceed one page | Always one page, never more | | Opening | Classic salutation formula | Hook with an achievement or notable fact | | Self-assessment | Modesty valued | Confidence expected | | Closing | Elaborate courtesy formula | "Sincerely" or "Best regards," sober |

The official Prospects.ac.uk guide on writing a cover letter 🔗 - a reference from British university career services - recalls a central principle: the cover letter complements the resume, it never duplicates it.

Expected structure in English

The Block Letter format

The Block Letter format, standard in Anglo-Saxon countries, requires left alignment throughout the document, no paragraph indentation, with a standard font (Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman, size 10 to 12).

The four-paragraph plan

  1. Opening paragraph: why you're writing, for which position, with a hook tied to an achievement or notable fact from your background
  2. Body paragraph 1: your relevant professional experience, with quantified results
  3. Body paragraph 2: your key skills directly related to the offer, reusing the job posting's vocabulary where possible
  4. Closing paragraph: why this company specifically, and a call to action ("I would welcome the opportunity to discuss...")

You can generate a first standardized version with the European tool Europass Cover Letter 🔗, useful for setting the structure before fully personalizing the content.

Key vocabulary and phrases

Opening phrases:

  • "I am writing to apply for the position of..."
  • "With great interest, I am applying for..."

To highlight a result:

  • "I successfully delivered / achieved / increased..."
  • "My role involved..." (avoid using alone - always follow with a result)

To close:

  • "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my background aligns with your needs."
  • "Sincerely," or "Best regards," (never a literal translation of "Cordialement" into "Cordially," too rare in professional English)

Full example

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to apply for the Financial Analyst position at [Company], as advertised on [source]. During my internship at [Previous Company], I built and maintained a DCF valuation model for a portfolio of 12 companies, directly supporting a €50M investment recommendation.

My academic background in corporate finance, combined with hands-on experience in financial modeling and Excel automation, has prepared me to contribute immediately to your team. I reduced monthly reporting time by 30% through process automation - a result I am eager to replicate in a fast-paced international environment such as yours.

What draws me to [Company] specifically is [concrete reason: a deal, a market position, a values statement from their site]. I am confident my analytical rigor and adaptability would make me a strong addition to your team.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application further at your convenience.

Sincerely, [Full Name]

This example works because each paragraph brings concrete proof (a number, a result, a precise reason) rather than a generic statement of intent.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Literally translating a French letter: French courtesy phrasing ("j'ai l'honneur de vous soumettre ma candidature") sounds artificial in English
  • Exceeding one page: beyond that, the recruiter won't read it to the end
  • Staying modest: a cover letter that claims no concrete result reads as flat next to Anglo-Saxon candidates used to direct self-promotion
  • Using overly formal or dated English: prefer a clear, professional style over pompous vocabulary
  • Forgetting to adapt tone to the target country: the UK stays more formal, the US accepts a more direct, sales-oriented tone

⚠️ Warning: a cover letter full of phrasing translated from French is one of the fastest signals spotted by an English-speaking recruiter - and one of the easiest to fix with a careful re-read.
