Investment Banking Summer Internship: Every Prerequisite to Apply

Before preparing for interviews, you need to be eligible. Year of study, school, grades, languages and work authorisation: what blocks and what can be compensated.

By Équipe FinanceCV

A summer internship in investment banking has an acceptance rate of 1 to 3%. Before even discussing interview preparation, you need to be eligible. Here is the complete inventory of prerequisites — year of study, university, grades, languages, work authorisation — and which ones are genuinely blocking.

The most eliminating prerequisite: year of study

This is the criterion that screens out the most candidates, and the most widely misunderstood.

Summer internship: penultimate year

Summer analyst programmes target students in their penultimate year of study. The logic is simple: the internship is a recruiting pipeline, and the bank wants to be able to make a convertible graduate offer at the end.

For a European student, this typically corresponds to the first year of a master's, or the gap year that follows. Applying to a summer programme in your first undergraduate year means being filtered out automatically, regardless of profile quality.

Spring week: first year

Spring weeks (mainly London) target first-year students on three-year courses, or second-year students on four-year courses. Short format — a few days to a week — with a discovery purpose.

This is the highest-leverage entry point of the entire path: the spring week to summer internship conversion rate is high, and selectivity is significantly lower than for a summer.

⚠️ Common mistake: always check the required graduation window ("expected graduation date"), not just the year label. That field is what triggers automatic rejection in application systems.

Off-cycle: the catch-up route

In France and Luxembourg, six-month off-cycle internships are a credible alternative, less constrained on year of study. They do not benefit from the same conversion pipeline, but they open access to the same teams.

University: a real but not absolute filter

Target schools in France

Direct pipelines: HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP, Sciences Po, Polytechnique and dual degrees such as X-HEC.

Accessible with a stronger file: EDHEC, EM Lyon, Dauphine, Centrale, Mines, Ponts, ENSAE, selective finance masters.

Other profiles: access is not closed, but it requires compensating through experience, grades and above all networking.

Market reality: a majority of bulge bracket seats go to the first group, because that is where banks concentrate their career fairs and alumni relationships. It is not a written rule, it is a channel effect.

💡 The real lever: if your school is not a target, a referral compensates more than any resume line. Networking in finance is not a bonus, it is the mechanism for bypassing the school filter.

Grades: what is actually required

Few European banks publish a numerical threshold, unlike the US market where GPA is explicitly requested.

Observed orders of magnitude:

  • Bulge brackets: top 10-15% of class
  • Elite boutiques: top 15-20%
  • Mid-market: top 30%
  • Big 4 advisory: solid file, significantly more flexible threshold

Practical points:

  • Transcripts are requested and verified at offer stage. Do not overstate anything.
  • A distinction or class ranking translates better than a raw average, which is often unreadable to a foreign recruiter.
  • One weak grade in a non-quantitative subject is recoverable; a broadly average file is compensated through experience.

Languages: English is not negotiable

Professional English is a functional prerequisite, not a plus.

  • Expected level: C1 minimum, written and spoken.
  • Commonly valued tests: TOEIC 900+, TOEFL 100+, IELTS 7.0+.
  • Part of the interviews will be conducted entirely in English, including for a Paris-based role.

A third language (German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Mandarin) is a genuine differentiator on regional coverage desks.

Work authorisation: the prerequisite discovered too late

This is the most underestimated point, and it can invalidate an application after several interview rounds.

For London: since Brexit, EU nationals no longer have an automatic right to work in the UK. Large firms frequently sponsor their summer analysts, but this is neither systematic nor guaranteed — visa categories and their conditions are set out on the UK government portal 🔗. Application forms almost always include an explicit question about your status — answer accurately, as a misstatement discovered later voids the offer.

For the United States: summer programmes in US offices are in practice reserved for students enrolled at a US university, through internship schemes attached to the student visa. From a European course, the realistic route runs through Paris, London or Frankfurt.

For Paris: the tripartite internship agreement (convention de stage) remains mandatory. It requires active enrolment at an educational institution for the full duration of the internship — something to confirm with your registrar before applying, particularly during a gap year. The applicable rules (maximum duration, minimum pay, mandatory clauses) are set out on service-public.gouv.fr 🔗.

⚠️ Do this now: confirm with your school that the agreement covers the intended period and country. An offer lost over paperwork is an offer lost for nothing.

Experience expected before applying

Nobody expects a first-year master's student to have done M&A already. That said, a resume entirely devoid of finance rarely gets through.

What is valued, by order of impact:

  1. An internship in transaction services, audit, corporate finance or an M&A boutique.
  2. A corporate internship with a quantified analytical component.
  3. Association experience with real budget or operational responsibility (junior enterprise, finance society, investment club).
  4. Documented personal projects: modelling, sector research, a tracked and argued portfolio.

The criterion is not the prestige of the line, but your ability to discuss it precisely, with figures, for twenty minutes.

📊 Non-negotiable skill: Excel proficiency is tested, explicitly or implicitly. A summer analyst who cannot build a clean spreadsheet is a summer analyst who does not convert.

Minimum technical skills

Before your first interview, you should be comfortable with:

  • Accounting: how the three financial statements link, and the impact of a transaction on each.
  • Valuation: DCF, trading comparables, precedent transactions.
  • Corporate finance: WACC, enterprise value versus equity value, accretion/dilution.
  • Markets: knowledge of two or three recent transactions in your target sector, with an argued view.

🎯 To go deeper: technical valuation questions form the expected foundation, including in internship interviews.

The resume: the formal constraints that eliminate

Prerequisites are not only academic. The document format itself is a filter.

  • One page, without exception, for a student profile.
  • Expected structure: Education, Experience, Skills, Interests.
  • Zero typos — one in two candidates is dropped on this criterion alone.
  • Every achievement quantified.
  • ATS-readable format: no multiple columns, no text boxes, no exotic headings.

⚠️ Reminder: the most common formatting mistakes eliminate candidates before the content is even read.

Eligibility checklist

Before submitting an application, validate these points:

  • ✅ Year of study matches the required graduation window
  • ✅ Work authorisation verified for the target country
  • ✅ Internship agreement confirmed by your school
  • ✅ English at C1, certified or certifiable
  • ✅ Transcript available and consistent with your file
  • ✅ At least one valuable experience in finance or analysis
  • ✅ One-page, quantified, ATS-readable resume
  • ✅ LinkedIn up to date and consistent with the resume

Conclusion

Summer internship prerequisites fall into two categories, and treating them identically is a costly mistake.

Blocking prerequisites — year of study, work authorisation, internship agreement — are non-negotiable and must be verified upfront. They cost only some administrative rigour, but they invalidate everything else if ignored.

Gradual prerequisites — school, grades, experience — can be compensated. An average file backed by a solid referral regularly beats a brilliant one sent blind.

That leaves the dimension easiest to control: format. A poorly structured resume causes an eligible profile to fail before any human review. With FinanceCV, structure and ATS compatibility are handled by the generator — you focus on what actually deserves the work, the substance and the quantified evidence.
