Working in Finance in Luxembourg: Employers, Salaries and Hiring

Europe's leading fund centre: jobs, salaries, cross-border work and hiring method.

By Équipe FinanceCV

Europe's leading investment fund centre, a few hours from Paris, with high salaries and a market that recruits French-speaking profiles: Luxembourg attracts thousands of finance professionals every year. But between funds, private banking, audit and consulting, the market is more specialized than it looks, and hiring has its own codes. Here are the figures, the employers, the salaries and the method for applying.

The Luxembourg finance market in figures

Luxembourg's financial centre carries great weight in a small economy. According to Luxembourg for Finance 🔗, the centre's promotion agency, the sector employs around 64,000 professionals, and the country ranks among the top five financial centres in the European Union.

A few structural benchmarks:

  • The fund industry: ALFI 🔗, the sector's association, states that Luxembourg-domiciled funds are distributed in more than 70 countries. Luxembourg is Europe's first investment fund centre.
  • Private equity: Luxembourg for Finance states that the centre hosts 18 of the 20 largest private equity players worldwide.
  • Supervision: the CSSF 🔗 is the authority that supervises the professionals and products of the Luxembourg financial sector (banks, management companies, funds and more). Its name appears in many compliance job postings.

Main employers and jobs

The Luxembourg market is organized around four main families of employers.

Fund industry players

Management companies, fund administrators, depositaries and transfer agents. This is the largest hiring pool for junior profiles. Common jobs:

  • fund accountant;
  • fund administration analyst;
  • compliance and regulatory reporting specialist;
  • portfolio manager and investment analyst in management companies.

Banks

Private banking, corporate banking and retail banking. Common jobs: wealth management advisor, relationship manager, credit analyst, risk manager.

Insurers

Life insurance, reinsurance and related asset management. Common jobs: actuary, contract manager, investment analyst.

Audit, consulting and law firms

The Big 4 and specialist firms recruit heavily for audit and consulting profiles. According to data relayed by the Luxembourg business press, this is one of the segments whose employment grew the most over the last decade, with average annual growth in the order of 5 to 6% between 2011 and 2021.

Salaries and cost of living

The pay level is one of Luxembourg's main attractions, but it must be read alongside the cost of living.

A legal benchmark: the qualified social minimum wage is about €3,325 gross per month for full-time work (figure relayed by the Frontaliers Grand Est 🔗 portal; check it at the time of your application as it is indexed). This floor is higher than what many juniors earn in France, and finance salaries sit well above it.

What to keep in mind:

  • Finance salaries vary strongly by job and employer: a junior fund accountant, a credit analyst and a private banker are not paid at the same level.
  • Housing costs are high, which leads many employees to live in France, Belgium or Germany and commute.
  • Commuting time is a real cost: the cross-border routes are congested at rush hour.

Applying: CV, languages and network

Languages: the first filter

The Luxembourg market is multilingual. In finance, English is the working language of most funds and international banks. French is very present, especially in retail banking and insurance. German and Luxembourgish are assets, above all for local or German-speaking clients.

State your levels without exaggerating (our guide to the bilingual French-English CV in finance details how), because a Luxembourg recruiter will test your level from the interview onwards.

Adapting your CV to the Luxembourg market

  • A polished English version, often required first (see our guide to the finance CV in English).
  • Local or recognized certifications: knowledge of European fund regulation (UCITS, AIFM) is sought after.
  • Work permit or right to work: if you are a citizen of the European Union you can work without a permit; otherwise, plan ahead for a residence permit.

Where to look

Luxembourg for Finance recommends registering on several platforms: jobs.lu, eFinancialCareers, JobFinder.lu, Moovijob. Professional associations such as ABBL and ALFI also publish listings. Recruitment firms specializing in financial services are numerous, and their services are generally free for candidates. ADEM, the national employment agency, also offers listings and support.

Networking matters

The market is small, hence very relationship-driven. Contact alumni of your school based in Luxembourg, attend ALFI or alumni association events, and polish your LinkedIn profile before any first contact. Our article on networking in finance details the method.

Formalities and status

If you are a national of a European Union country, no work authorization procedure is needed. You should nevertheless look into three subjects before signing:

  1. Taxation. The France-Luxembourg tax treaty does not provide a cross-border worker status: tax is withheld in Luxembourg, and the salary must be declared in France, with a tax credit to avoid double taxation (source: Frontaliers Grand Est 🔗). Personalized tax advice is recommended.
  2. Remote working. The rules on remote-working days from France have tax and social security consequences. They evolve, so check them when you sign.
  3. Social protection. Affiliation is Luxembourgish; health coverage and pension depend on this scheme.

⚠️ Warning: these rules change regularly. Check them with official sources and, if possible, with a specialist adviser before committing.

Tips for settling in

Test before moving. Many employees start as cross-border commuters before deciding to relocate. The daily commute quickly shows whether the lifestyle suits you.

Negotiate with the cost of living in mind. A higher salary only makes sense relative to more expensive housing and travel.

Aim for a first job in a promising segment. Fund administration, compliance and audit recruit many juniors and are an excellent gateway to more specialized functions.

Polish the quality of your application. A Luxembourg recruiter receives applications from all over Europe: a clear CV, bilingual if needed, and compatible with screening software makes a difference from the first step. FinanceCV helps on this point: you write your content, and the tool handles formatting and ATS compatibility, without you having to worry about layout.
