Working in Finance in Lyon: Employers, Salaries and Hiring

A major regional financial centre for support, control and retail banking functions.

By Équipe FinanceCV

Lyon is often cited as France's second financial centre for many functions: retail banking, control, back office, asset management, insurance, audit and accounting. For candidates who do not want to work in Paris, it is a serious option. Here is how this market is organised, who hires there and how to apply.

The local finance market

Rather than a flood of hard-to-verify figures, remember the structure of the Lyon market:

  • A diverse fabric: the Lyon metropolitan area is a large service-sector job market, with regional bank headquarters, audit and consulting firms, asset managers and insurers.
  • An organised ecosystem: the association Lyon Place Financière 🔗, founded in 1987, brings together more than 300 players from finance, business support and regional companies.
  • Demand for control and support functions: compliance, risk, accounting, management control, but also customer relations and wealth management.
  • A market less focused on "financial markets" than Paris: trading-floor and pure investment banking roles are rarer there.

⚠️ Keep in mind: if your goal is investment banking or trading, Paris remains the main hub. Lyon suits profiles aiming at retail banking, corporate financing, control or asset management.

Main employers and jobs

Retail and financing banks

The big mutual and banking groups have major regional offices there: Crédit Agricole regional banks, the Banque Populaire and Caisse d'Epargne networks, Crédit Mutuel, LCL and other banks. Crédit Agricole group openings are gathered on groupecreditagricole.jobs 🔗. Also check each regional institution's careers site.

Audit, consulting and accounting

The major audit and consulting firms have offices in Lyon. It is a good entry point for accounting and finance profiles, with exposure to regional SMEs and mid-caps, and often a more varied portfolio than at the start of a career in Paris.

Asset management, insurance and control functions

  • Asset and wealth management: regional asset managers, wealth advisers.
  • Insurance: actuarial functions, underwriting, finance.
  • Industrial and service companies: finance department, management control, treasury. The region's industrial base provides many roles in these functions.

Pay and cost of living

Salaries in Lyon are generally a little lower than in Paris for equivalent roles, but the cost of living, especially housing, is lower too.

  • Salary benchmarks: our guide to finance salaries gives orders of magnitude; apply a prudent discount for Lyon depending on role and employer.
  • Housing: the housing budget is often the main lever. Compare rents in the neighbourhoods you target before negotiating salary.
  • Transport: the metropolitan area has a metro, tram and bus network that lets you do without a car in many neighbourhoods.

In practice: at equal net pay, purchasing power is often higher than in Paris, especially for a first job.

Applying: resume, languages and network

A resume adapted to the local market

  • Show your motivation for Lyon. Lyon recruiters worry about candidates who only want a stepping stone to Paris. A clear sentence about your local plans makes the difference.
  • Adapt the content to the employer: customer relations for a retail bank, rigour and method for audit, versatility for an SME.
  • Highlight English if you target an international company or an audit firm: see our guide on the finance resume in English and internationally.

The Lyon network

The Lyon market runs largely on referrals. Rely on:

  • your school's alumni associations;
  • ecosystem events such as those of Lyon Place Financière;
  • LinkedIn, to target local team leads;
  • job forums and recruitment days at schools in the region.

Formalities and status

  • Apprenticeship and internship: the entry point most used by young graduates. Schools and universities in the region have partnerships with local employers.
  • Permanent and fixed-term contracts: most offers are posted on employers' careers sites and on standard job platforms.
  • Remote work: more and more control and support roles allow a few remote days a week, which makes a Lyon-based role conceivable for a company based elsewhere.

For precise conditions (collective agreement, trial period, remote work), always check the posting and the contract: they vary by employer.

Tips for settling in

  1. Visit before committing: the atmosphere and neighbourhoods vary a lot (Presqu'île, Part-Dieu, Confluence, Villeurbanne).
  2. Choose your neighbourhood based on your workplace: commuting time weighs more than rent on daily life.
  3. Negotiate knowing the market: compare pay for the same role in Lyon and Paris.
  4. Build your network on arrival: associations, clubs, professional events.
  5. Keep your resume up to date: Lyon opportunities often come by word of mouth and need a quick reaction.
