Looking for a part-time job in finance (80%, 60%, four days a week) is still a sensitive topic for many candidates, who fear being seen as less committed. Well presented, part-time is not a handicap. Here is how to build a resume that reassures the recruiter from the first read.
Why part-time is not a negative signal
Part-time is a recognised way of organising work under French labour law, with a written contract and rights equivalent to full-time, notably for paid leave, as Service-Public.fr explains on working time in the private sector 🔗. The reasons are many and perfectly legitimate: childcare, returning to study, a side project, health, family caregiving, or simply a work-life balance choice.
What a recruiter fears is not the percentage. It is three implicit questions:
- Will you be available at key moments (closings, reporting, peak periods)?
- Will the role be workable with a reduced load?
- Is your motivation real, or is part-time a fallback?
Your resume must answer these questions without appearing to.
How to state your availability on the resume
Be clear, factual and brief.
- In the header or summary: "Seeking a management controller position at 80%" or "Available part-time (4 days/week)". A discreet mention is enough.
- Do not hide the information: a recruiter who discovers it at the interview feels less well disposed.
- Do not justify yourself in the resume: no need to explain your personal reasons. You can address them orally if asked.
- Specify days or slots if your schedule is fixed; it makes planning easier for the company.
💡 Going further: if part-time follows a break, our guide to the resume after parental leave shows how to present that period.
Highlighting your organisation and productivity
The best answer to the recruiter's concern is results. Quantify what you accomplished within a constrained schedule:
- "Monthly close of 3 entities completed at D+4, on an 80% schedule."
- "Automated weekly reporting with Excel/VBA: 6 hours saved per week for the team."
- "Delegated and documented procedures: continuity ensured during absences."
Skills that reassure, to bring out in the resume:
- prioritisation and deadline management;
- autonomy and rigorous documentation;
- efficiency: automation, standardisation, tools;
- proactive communication: clear handovers, regular check-ins.
If you have already held a part-time position successfully, highlight it: it is the best proof.
Anticipating the recruiter's part-time questions
Prepare short, factual answers oriented towards the company:
- "How do you handle peak periods?": "I plan closings with my manager, schedule my days on site accordingly and remain reachable on critical points."
- "This role is planned full-time, why this choice?": refocus on the value you bring: "I can be fully effective on this scope in 4 days thanks to my organisation."
- "Do you plan to move to full-time?": be sincere. If you have no precise goal, say so simply.
- "How do you work with the team on your days off?": mention written handovers, shared tools, fixed check-in points.
⚠️ Warning: do not overplay availability ("I'll always answer, even outside working hours"). You risk creating expectations you do not want to meet.
Sample resume for a part-time position
Take a management controller with 8 years of experience, applying for an 80% position:
- Summary: "Senior management controller, 8 years of experience in an industrial group. Seeking an 80% position (4 days per week)."
- Experience: "Management controller, industrial group (2021-2026): budget oversight of 3 entities (€45M revenue), monthly closes at D+4, reporting automation (6 hours saved per week)."
- Skills: "Advanced Excel, Power BI, SAP, consolidation."
- Languages: "Fluent English."
What works: the part-time mention is factual and discreet, and the rest of the resume talks about results and autonomy.
